How to Have Peace When It Looks Like the World Is Going Crazy
If you are feeling more stressed, you are not alone. Everywhere we look, it feels like the world is spinning out of control, wars raging overseas, division between Republicans and Democrats here at home, uncertainty over new technologies like artificial intelligence, and constant stress over politics, the economy, and the future, plus if you have kids or a spouse, add more! It’s easy to feel anxious. But the truth is, the world has always been unsettled.
The Bible’s Perspective on Peace
Jesus never promised us a trouble-free life. In fact, He said plainly: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). Peace, according to Scripture, is not the absence of problems but the presence of Christ in the middle of them.
When Jesus told His disciples, “My peace I give to you” (John 14:27), He didn’t add conditions. He didn’t say, “You’ll have peace if the economy is strong, if your leaders are wise, or if the world feels stable.” His peace is a gift—unshakable, because it comes from Him, not from circumstances.
Examples from History
Think about the apostle Paul. He wrote many of his letters from prison, chained and facing execution, yet his writings are filled with joy and encouragement. Philippians 4:6–7 tells us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
If anyone had reason to feel stressed, it was Paul. Yet he chose to focus on Christ. The same was true for Christians throughout history—from believers living through the Roman Empire’s persecution, to families hiding from Hitler during World War II. The world’s chaos has never stopped God from offering peace.
Why God’s Peace Is Different
Worldly peace depends on everything going right: calm politics, no wars, stable finances. But God’s peace is rooted in something eternal. It is anchored in His promises and His presence. It doesn’t shift with the headlines. That’s why Paul could write about peace while in a jail cell, and why Christians today can experience calm hearts even when news feeds are filled with fear.
How to Experience This Peace Today
Pray instead of worrying. Replace fear with prayer, just as Paul instructed: Don't worry about anything, instead pray about everything.
Stay in God’s Word. Remind yourself daily of His promises. Read your Bible, read books about people of faith, listen to Christian music. K-Love in the US is probably the most popular but I like Vision Christian Radio out of Australia. If you have CarPlay can stream their music via the app.
Fix your mind on Christ. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Remember the bigger picture. Wars, politics, and uncertainty aren’t new. God has been faithful through every generation, and He hasn’t changed.
Trust the giver of peace. Jesus doesn’t just offer peace; He is our peace (Ephesians 2:14).
Even when it looks like the world is falling apart, God’s Word reminds us that His peace is available, steady, and lasting. The same Christ who calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee still calms troubled hearts today.
