The Uncertainty of Life — and the Steadfastness of God

This morning I read something that shook me.

A car crashed into a daycare center, killing four children. Just writing those words feels heavy and wrong. These were children who had just been dropped off by their parents — likely with quick hugs and rushed goodbyes — expecting to pick them up later that day. But that day never came.

It’s a gut-wrenching reminder that life is not guaranteed. We wake up with plans — work, appointments, dinner, errands — and we assume we’ll get through our checklist. But the truth is, we don’t know what the next hour holds, much less tomorrow.

Life is fragile. And unpredictable.

We like to think we’re in control, but deep down we know we’re not. That’s not meant to scare us, but to make us pay attention to what really matters.

The Bible doesn’t shy away from this truth. James 4:14 puts it bluntly:

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

But Scripture also offers something else — something far more important than certainty about life’s events: the certainty of God’s presence.

He doesn't promise ease, safety, or control. But He promises to walk with us. To hold us. To never leave us — in good or bad, in tragedy or in peace.

Psalm 23:4 — “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

Isaiah 43:2 — “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

Matthew 28:20 — “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

These aren’t vague comfort phrases. They are promises from a God who has never broken His word.

So today, I find myself reminded — life is uncertain, but God is not.

We may not know what will happen next, but we know who will be there when it does. And that’s enough.

Hold your loved ones a little tighter today. Say the things that matter. Live with purpose. And walk closely with the One who holds every breath.
