How Facebook Can Help Churches Reach Their Community with the Gospel

In every generation, the Church has used the tools available to spread the Gospel. From the Roman roads that carried Paul’s letters, to the printing press that spread Luther’s tracts, to the radio and television ministries of the 20th century, God’s people have used communication methods to tell the Good News. Today, one of the biggest communication tools available is Facebook — and it would be foolish for churches to ignore it.

Facebook is not the Gospel. It’s simply a modern "Roman road" — a way to go out into the community without ever leaving your chair. When used wisely, Facebook can help churches extend their message beyond their walls and into homes, neighborhoods, and even workplaces.

Here’s how Facebook can help your church reach your community — and what members can do to make it more effective.

Why Facebook Matters for Churches

  1. It’s Where People Are

    • Over 70% of adults in the United States use Facebook, and most of them log in daily. It’s not just young people or just seniors — it's a cross-section of your entire community.

    • If we are called to “go into all the world” (Mark 16:15), part of that "world" today includes the online world.

  2. It Builds Relationships

    • Facebook allows people to connect with your church at their own pace. Some may first "follow" a page, watch a few worship clips, and read a few posts before ever stepping through your doors.

    • It opens the door for personal interaction, prayer requests, questions about faith, and invitations to events.

  3. It Multiplies Your Message

    • A sermon preached on Sunday reaches the people who attend. A sermon clip or a quote shared on Facebook can reach hundreds more — friends of friends, neighbors you’ve never met, even strangers who are searching for hope.

  4. It’s Cost-Effective

    • Churches can spend thousands on mailers, radio ads, or billboards. A well-managed Facebook presence can reach far more people for a fraction of the cost.

What Churches Should Be Doing

1. Create a Strong, Active Page

  • Post regularly. Share upcoming events, short devotional thoughts, prayer requests, sermon highlights, and real photos of church life.

  • Keep the tone warm, inviting, and genuine. People can spot fake, polished marketing a mile away.

2. Use Facebook Events

  • Every time you have a service, Bible study, VBS, or outreach event, create an Event on Facebook. Invite people to RSVP and share it.

3. Share Real Stories

  • Testimonies of changed lives, baptisms, mission trips — these are powerful. With permission, share videos or written stories. Nothing moves the heart like seeing how Jesus is still changing lives.

4. Stream or Share Parts of Worship

  • Whether it’s the whole service or just a clip of the sermon, having your services online allows people to “visit” from a distance before they ever walk in the door.

5. Offer Hope and Truth

  • Not every post has to invite people to church. Share Scripture, encouragement, a simple prayer. You never know who will read it at just the right time.

What Church Members Can Do

You don’t need to be a professional marketer to help your church’s Facebook outreach. In fact, every member has an important role.

Here’s how members can help:

  • Like, Comment, and Share Church Posts

    • When you interact with your church's posts, Facebook shows them to more people — including your friends. Every like, comment, and share extends the church's reach.

  • Personally Invite Friends

    • Tag friends in event posts or send them a private message with an invitation to an upcoming service or outreach.

  • Share Your Own Story

    • Don’t be afraid to post about your own faith, how God is working in your life, or how your church has been a blessing. A personal testimony is more powerful than any ad.

  • Be a Light

    • Represent Christ well in everything you post, share, and comment — even when discussing non-church topics. People are always watching.

  • Pray for Opportunities

    • Ask God to use your Facebook activity to plant seeds and open doors for conversations about faith.

Final Thoughts

Facebook will never replace the personal, face-to-face ministry that the Church is called to do. But it can open new doors for relationships, conversations, and invitations that lead to lives being changed by the Gospel.

The fields are white for harvest (John 4:35) — including the ones online. Let’s be faithful to sow the seed everywhere God gives us opportunity.

The message hasn’t changed. But the methods can — and must — if we are to reach every soul we can.

Some ideas for the Church's Facebook Page

1. Scripture Post

"No matter where you are in life, God’s Word brings hope.

'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' — Matthew 11:28

We invite you to worship with us this Sunday. There’s a place for you."

2. Invitation to an Event

"Looking for a place to belong?

Join us this Sunday at [time] at [church name]! We’ll have uplifting music, a message of hope, and a warm welcome.

Bring your family, bring a friend — we can’t wait to meet you!
[Facebook Event link]"

3. Testimony Highlight

"God is still changing lives!

Last Sunday, we celebrated [Name]'s baptism — a public declaration that Jesus has made all things new.

Pray for [Name] as they continue their walk of faith! If you want to know more about following Jesus, message us!"

4. Sermon Clip/Highlight

(Attach a 60–90 second video clip or quote image)

"Missed Sunday's message? Here’s a powerful moment you won’t want to miss.

5. Prayer Invitation

"Need prayer?

We believe in the power of prayer and would be honored to pray for you.

Send us a private message or comment below. You are not alone."

For Individual Church Members to Post

1. Personal Testimony Invitation

"I’m so grateful for my church family at [church name]!

If you’re looking for a place where you’ll be loved and where God’s Word is preached, I’d love for you to visit with me this Sunday.

Let me know if you want to come — I’ll save you a seat!"

2. Sharing a Church Post

(After sharing a church's event or post)

"This church has been a blessing to me. If you’re thinking about visiting somewhere, this would be a great place to start!"

3. Simple Scripture Share

"When life feels overwhelming, I’m thankful for God’s promises:

'The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.' — Psalm 23:1"

4. Friendly Invite

"If you don’t have a church home, or just haven’t been in a while, why not come visit this Sunday?

No pressure — just people who care about you and a God who loves you more than you know."

Tip for Both Church and Members

Use real pictures whenever possible — not stock photos.
Pictures of real people, real events, and real smiles are 10x more powerful than slick graphics.

Ideas for weekly Facebook Posting Plan for Churches

Monday – Scripture & Encouragement

  • Goal: Start the week off with a focus on God’s Word.

  • Example Post:

"New week, same faithful God.

'The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.' — Lamentations 3:22-23

May this week be filled with His peace."

Wednesday – Midweek Invitation or Testimony

  • Goal: Midweek reminder that people are welcome and that lives are being changed.

  • Example Post:

"Need a fresh start? You’re invited to join us this Sunday at [time]!

We believe Jesus changes lives — and we would love for you to be part of what God is doing at [church name].

Message us if you have questions!"

Or, share a brief testimony:

"Last Sunday, we celebrated [Name] coming to Christ. God's still working today! Praise Him!"

Friday – Weekend Event Reminder

  • Goal: Nudge people to make plans for Sunday.

  • Example Post:

"Sunday is almost here! We would love to see you at [church name].

Service begins at [time]. Come expecting a warm welcome and a message of hope.

[Address and/or link to Event]"

(Include a real photo if possible — not just a flyer.)

Sunday Morning – Real-Time Encouragement

  • Goal: Create excitement and remind people it's not too late to come.

  • Example Post (before service):

"It’s a beautiful day to worship the Lord!

There’s a place for you at [church name] — and it’s not too late to join us.

Service starts at [time]. Come as you are!"

(You could include a quick picture of the church getting ready — greeters at the door, coffee brewing, people arriving.)

Optional Extra Posts (if you want to do more)

  • Tuesday – Share a short clip from last Sunday’s sermon.

  • Thursday – Post a "Throwback Thursday" photo of a past baptism, VBS, mission trip, or community event.

  • Saturday – Share a Bible trivia question or a fun “What’s your favorite hymn?” type post to boost engagement.

Key Points to Remember

  • Always invite. Always encourage. Always stay real.

  • Use photos of your own people — it matters more than stock images.

  • Short posts are fine — don’t write novels.

  • Respond to comments and prayer requests promptly — ministry happens in the replies, too.

Closing thought:
Facebook is like a modern-day front porch.
The question is: will your church be standing there with a smile and an open invitation — or will you leave the porch empty?

Use what God has given us to reach who He has placed around us.
