What Makes Someone a True Follower of Christ?
Many people claim to be Christians. They go to church, know the hymns, can quote a verse or two. But Jesus made it clear, not everyone who calls Him Lord will enter heaven.
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.”
— Matthew 7:21
That’s a hard truth. It tells us that Christianity isn’t about labels, habits, or appearance. It’s about something far deeper, a heart that belongs to Christ.
It’s Not About Religion, It’s About Relationship
Being a Christian isn’t about playing church or following rules to earn points with God.
It’s about knowing Jesus personally, walking with Him daily, talking with Him, trusting Him, and letting His Spirit change how you think and live.
When your heart truly belongs to Him, obedience isn’t forced. It’s natural.
You follow because you love Him.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” — John 14:15
Faith That Works
Salvation is a gift of grace, not something we can earn. But genuine faith always produces fruit.
When Christ transforms a life, you can see it. It shows up in how you treat people, how you forgive, how you handle temptation, and how you serve.
“Faith without works is dead.” — James 2:17
If someone claims to be a Christian but there’s no evidence of a changed heart, something’s missing. Real faith moves you to action, not out of duty, but out of love for the One who saved you.
The Servant Who Heard “Well Done”
In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30), the Master praises His servants not for being perfect, but for being faithful. They took what He gave them, their time, resources, and abilities, and used it to honor Him.
That’s what God asks of us: Faithfulness. Steadiness. Obedience.
A heart that keeps showing up and doing what’s right, even when no one else is watching.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:21
The One Thing That Matters
When you stand before God one day, it won’t matter how much you owned, how popular you were, or how many times you went to church. What will matter is this:
Did you know Jesus and did that relationship shape how you lived?
A true follower of Christ is marked by a genuine, obedient faith that loves Jesus and lives out His commands.
That’s the kind of faith that hears, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Reflection Question
If Christ returned today, would He recognize you as one of His faithful servants, not just by what you’ve said, but by how you’ve lived?
