Don’t Waste Your Life: Use What God Gave You

I was listening to a YouTube video by Rick Warren on wasting the talents God has given us that connected with me a lot so I wrote my thoughts below.  The video is at the end.  I encourage you to spend the time to listen to what he had to say.

God has given each of us talents—gifts that are meant to be used. Not buried. Not ignored. Not set aside for “someday.” The truth is, someday often never comes. And when our time on this earth is up, we will stand before the One who gave us those talents, and we’ll have to give an account.

Jesus didn’t sugarcoat this. In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30), He told of three servants entrusted with varying amounts of money. Two of them invested and multiplied what they were given. The third buried his gift in the ground. He played it safe. And when the master returned, he was not pleased.

The message is clear: God expects us to use what He gave us.

Whether your talent is teaching, building, comforting, leading, creating, or serving—use it. Your abilities are not accidents. They’re not yours by chance. They’re part of your calling.

We all want to hear those words one day:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
But that only happens if we’re faithful with what we’ve been given.

Here’s the hard truth: if we don’t use our God-given talents, we’re not just wasting opportunities—we're wasting our lives. We weren’t put here to coast through life or blend into the background. We were put here to make a difference for the Kingdom.

So ask yourself today:

  • What am I good at?

  • What doors has God opened for me?

  • Where can I make an impact?

Then get moving. Start doing. Don’t overthink it. Don’t wait for the perfect time. The perfect time is now.

Let’s not reach the end of our days with regret. Let’s not hear God say, “I gave you all these talents—and you used none of them.”

Instead, let’s live each day like it matters—because it does.

Don’t waste your life. Use what God gave you.
