Sowing Seeds at Halloween: Blessings for the Giver and the Receiver

Halloween is often seen as a night of costumes, candy, and fun, but for believers, it can also be an opportunity to quietly plant seeds of faith. When we hand out gospel tracts along with candy, we’re doing more than offering something sweet; we’re giving out a message that can change a life.

I’ve learned something on mission trips that also applies here. When I travel to serve others, whether it’s across the world or across tow,  I go expecting to bless those I meet. And yes, that happens. But almost every time, I come home realizing that I was the one who received the greater blessing. God uses those moments to stretch my faith, remind me of His goodness, and show me the joy that comes from serving.

It’s the same at Halloween. You may never see the outcome of the seeds you plant, but God does. Maybe a child who reads that tract will start to ask questions about Jesus. Maybe a parent will tuck it away and read it later, during a hard time when they need hope. Maybe someone who has drifted from God will be reminded that He’s still reaching out.

We never know what God will do with a simple act of obedience. But His Word promises that “those who sow generously will also reap generously” (2 Corinthians 9:6). When we give,  whether it’s candy, time, or a gospel message we’re participating in His plan to bring light into the darkness.

So this Halloween, don’t underestimate the power of a small act done in love. You’re not just handing out candy. You’re sowing seeds of eternal life. And while you may not see the harvest right away, you can trust that God is working, blessing both the giver and the receiver in ways beyond what we can imagine.
